What is the ‚Berlin Open Class‘?
The Berlin Open Class is a 2-hour session taught by a teacher of the NIB community taking professional dancers and advanced students through the beautiful and intricate world of the various styles of Natyam. Each session is uniquely tailored to cater to different aspects and experiences of the different forms and styles with a specific concept chosen by the instructor.<\/p>\n

Krishna – Knave of the Hearts by Stella Uppal Subbiah<\/a><\/p>\n

The Bhavan, London<\/p>\n

Krishna, one of the forms of Vishnu, is the most widely remembered, sung about and celebrated figures of Indian mythology. <\/span>
‚Knave of Hearts‘ presents choreographies that depict the myriad Krishna narratives that have become embedded into stories that frame the innocence of childhood. <\/span>Starting from the Tamil epic Cilappatikaram to Purandara Dasa and the modern composers such as Tiger Varadacharya, the show looks at literary perceptions of Krishna in various languages including Sanskrit, Tamil, Malayalam, Braj, Kannada, and Marathi among others to unearth the very fabric of Indian culture and language. It seeks to expand the possibilities of Bharatanatyam to translate myths from their literal representations to their symbolic meanings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stella Akka invited me to choreograph and dance an experimental Shabdam on Yashoda, on music especially composed for this performance by Vignesh Ishwar. Poetry by Periyalvar in Tamil and Surdas in Braj. <\/em><\/p>\n
